Just wondering whether anyone else other than myself and Boothy got themselves onto the beta test program?
boothy116 , it would be good to see your opinions on what you have found with it so far. I have only had one short test with it since it went live on Tuesday but my initial thoughts are below:-
Weight Distribution has now been removed and there are no additional setup parameters added from previously so the setup options have been reduced this year. With the change in regulations for 2019 this was something that they had to do so can't really complain about it and I think overall it has been well received by the beta community. The hope is that it will lead to less unrealistic setups but time will tell. The setup options in the F1 games has always felt a bit light and in comparison to other games out there has always felt a bit dated and this still remains with the new game. The setup screen interface could do with a change now after all these years and maybe that is part of what gives this dated feel to that particular aspect of the game. The general thoughts are that aero plays a bigger part this year in effecting the balance of the car and is the thing to look at when trying to get the car balance you require now the weight distribution has been removed.
ERS management is currently much more stringent. Based on my initial run out you will no longer be able to leave it on the higher settings as long as we have had with 2018 and also regeneration is slower. To get the best from it I think I will be looking at an alternate way of managing it rather than the current way of popping up the HUD and managing it via the d-pad which is a bit too cumbersome for frequent adjustments, especially on the tighter circuits.
Graphically it is very impressive and in particular the cockpit is hugely improved. The clarity of the data on the wheel is a massive improvement, so much so that the need to have it on screen is probably redundant. It feels at first sight the view from the cockpit is much improved but I need to revisit this to see if that’s just that first sight feel.
We have those nice shiny new tyres this year which do look good but the disappointment for me is that we still get no visual representation of tyre wear, graining and blistering. They do dull down after a while and lose the shiny gloss although the general opinion is that it takes too long for this to happen.
I haven’t tested enough to find out how the tyre wear is this year but still no flat spotting which disappoints me every year it’s missing. It pllays a big part in F1 races more than any other so I wish they would get this sorted.
Everything in the race setup and race session interface is pretty much the same and from that perspective you won’t really notice you are in a new game.
A very brief look at the rain has me thinking that has been improved again. The rain effects on the visor looked very impressive and the handling seems to have been given a tweak in the wet weather and felt on that brief go to be a bit more natural than I feel we get with 2018 which to me still feels a bit screwy. I will test this more as soon as I can but as the opening phase only runs until Tuesday that may have to wait until phase two.
Overall I am impressed with what I have seen so far. No major changes and no feature that has any kind of wow factor but as 2018 was such a big improvement anyway if this one can just take that on a step or two more it should be a solid release. More to follow as and when I get to test it out more.
