Q 1
R P5
I went out very early in qualifying to make the best of the conditions and managed to put in a competitive time, when Liam put in a mega lap only to lose it after his disconnect which handed me a fortunate Pole Position.
On the formation lap the tyre and brake temps were dropping after a few corners despite working hard to maintain any kind of temperatures in the tyres and brakes, I knew Liam in P2 would be quick at the start and even though I had the line into T1 Liam was in a great position to take the lead and he took the lead in the first few corners, the track was very green after the rain in quali and I lost P2 to Tyler after understeering off in T7. As the track began to rubber in and the tyre temps increased I found a good rhythm and increased my lead from Wayne in P4, I ran for a few laps on the slicks as the rain began but pitted on lap 8 and changed to Rain tyres, i rejoined in P6 and began to push in an attempt to make the undercut work, I retook P3 after the pit stops had cycled through but I had lost time to Liam and Tyler. I saw the gap back to P4 had increased so I pushed to try and close in on Tyler and Liam but they were too far in front. The rain began to ease off in the 3rd stint and my wet tyres began to overheat and I had to look for the wet part of the track to cool them and as my pit window was almost open I gambled on fitting slicks, the car was fast on the dry parts but tricky to handle on the damp surface and I reluctantly decided to go back to the west as it began to rain again. I rejoined in P4 behind Karl and I worked hard to reel him in and with some quick laps in was soon in his spray, I knew Karl had been struggling at the T3 puddle and I saw Karl sideways in the corner but couldn’t avoid any contact resulting in some suspension damage and another trip to the pits, I remerged in P5 some 17 seconds behind Wayne but with only a handful of laps left I couldn’t challenge Wayne for P4 and finished some 11 seconds behind Wayne.
Massive congratulations to Tyler for his win, always great to win at your home circuit and well done Liam and Karl for your podium finish.
Overall an exciting and challenging race in difficult conditions, a thoroughly enjoyable evening of racing, great battles up and down the field and it’s great to see how competitive and close both championships are.
Looking forward to Sonoma which is a very different circuit.
Cheers
Dave
