Was very satisfied with a PB good enough for P2 in qualifying, we knew the car was fast but I wasn’t expecting a front row start, struggled in the early part of quali but as the track evolved and the grip improved I found more speed in the car and took 2nd with a few minutes left in the session.
Made a fairly good start in the Sprint race and was fighting with Karl for the lead but with a defensive line into T2 i beached the car on the Sausage Kerb and ended up last, we’d worked on the balance between speed and grip in our testing and soon enough we were on the back of the pack and began picking off cars, Rich, Dan and Bryan were battling for third and I closed in on that battle trying to get involved, I saw a small opportunity at the hairpin as Bryan had missed the apex but unfortunately we made contact which ended his race so apologies for that Bryan, Dan and Rich had also collected each other and I took advantage and took P3 and some good points. Great win by Karl and well done Pete for your podium.
Feature race start was an improvement from the Sprint and jumped from P6 to 2nd behind Dan in the opening corners, I knew I was faster than my teammate and Dan gave me the lead after 3 laps, I hoped that Dan could stay with me but as the race unfolded I had opened a 2 second gap to Dan and he was fighting with Bryan, Karl and Pete, the car was fast and the tyre deg was significantly better than in the Sprint and I was happy with increasing gap but a lack of concentration led to a spin which resulted in some suspension damage forcing me to pit on lap 10 5 laps earlier than planned, i boxed the car and after repairs were complete i rejoined just on the lead lap but with the leaders a few corners back, the car was good on its new tyres and I began to mentally juggle any strategic options, originally we’d planned on a 2 stop race but having to stop earlier than planned made it difficult to maintain any track position if I had to stop again, as other drivers pitted I regained some positions and was running as high as 3rd but the fuel situation was becoming an issue and I knew that I couldn’t stretch out the mileage, I pitted from 3rd with 22 minutes left in the race, after a good stop i rejoined in P5 but I had taken a decent chunk out of Rich’s lead over us and I set about trying to put some pressure on Rich and Pete with my fresh tyres, I pushed hard and I was pleased to see the gap to P4 closing at about a second a lap but with the gap at 5 seconds and 6 minutes left i overcooked the stadium sector and ended up going wide and running across the grass and ending my pursuit of Pete, all in all a good performance but perhaps we should’ve been challenging for the win.
Massive congratulations to Karl for firstly the double win and more importantly for the Drivers Championship win, well deserved mate and again you’re a very worthy Champion and a credit to our League, also congratulations to Pete and Karl for the Teams Championship win, you’ve both consistently been fast and competitive and deserved winners. Well done to my Teammate Dan for a great drive for P2 and congratulations to Rich for P3. Lastly congratulations to Danny for finishing both races and showing great awareness and race craft, I’m sure we can help you on your sim racing career jour
With 2 race weekends left in this championship I think that this series has been a decent success and with a few small alterations I’d definitely consider running it again in the future.
Well done everyone that raced last night, shame we couldn’t have a few more on the grid but nevertheless i enjoyed the quality racing with you all.
See you in Barcelona.
Cheers
Dave
